Book Review
In What My Mother Doesn't Know, Sophie Stein is the popular girl in school. She dates the guys every other girl wants, Dylan, and is envied by many. After Sophie and Dylan break up, Sophie has no one to go to the halloween dance with. Thats when she meats "the masked man". But life goes on and Sophie finds herself constantly thinking of the masked man, his eyes, the touch of his warm hand, and it's driving her mad. Then one day, because all of her friends were on winter vacations to interesting places, she decides to plan one of her own. Her first stop is the museum, where she sees a familiar face sitting on the bench in front of one of her favorite paintings, Robin Murphy aka the school reject. When the two of them begin to talk she finds herself to be falling for him. It isnt until then that she finds out exactly who her masked man is... As winter break drew to a close, Sophie began to worry about what her friends would think of her new boyfriend when they returned. When the fateful day finally arrived she walked into the lunchroom and saw two tables. one with Murphy, not even expecting her to glance his way and the other with Rachel and Grace, Frantically waving in her direction. This is when she has to choose between popularity and what will truly make her happy.
In My opinion, the way Sonya Sones portrays the characters in the book is very believable. For example, in high-school, most girls are greatly influenced by what others think of them and that is what drives Sophie to making the decision she has to make between which table to sit at a difficult one.
